Have you ever watched a group of contortionists perform live? Their extreme physical flexibility often leaves one dumbfounded. Only a few people can bend their bodies beyond normal limits. Since it is a unique skill, it would not be wrong to say that the skill these people possess is God-gifted. However, pulling off acrobatic acts require proper training and practice.
Amongst the contortionists who have gained popularity because of their extraordinary performances is Sofie Dossi. She came to the limelight in 2016 when she participated in America’s Got Talent. Only at the age of 14, she left everyone spell-bounded during the contest’s finale when she performed a spinning act by balancing her entire body on one hand.
Sofie, who is the most flexible person in the world according to many sources, has 4 million followers on Instagram. She has made multiple appearances on television at quite a young age and has become a superstar. Therefore, people are interested to know about her journey and what she is currently up to. In this article, we will try to answer the questions that often pop up in the minds of Sofie’s fans.
How did Sofie become a contortionist?
You might be surprised to know that the famous performer learned the art of contortion online. At the age of 12, she came across a performer’s video on the internet that inspired her so much that she started learning the art via YouTube videos.
Sofie’s is a true example of “where there is a will, there is a way”.
Today, she has a YouTube channel with 5.9 million subscribers. Not only this, but she has explored other avenues such as acting. Many might not know that she has appeared in two television series, namely K.C. Undercover and Disney’s Bizaardvark. However, we do not know for sure whether she wants to establish a career in acting or not.
Unique postures by Sofie Dossi
Applying nail paint perfectly is an art that most of us struggle to master even when sitting in the most comfortable posture. Sofie takes us by surprise as she effortlessly applies nail color while lying down in such a manner that her feet touch her shoulders.
Taking a good selfie is an art. Like most teenagers, Sofie is also obsessed with clicking her photos. However, doing so while balancing your entire body, on one hand, is something only a contortionist can do.
Even though the skill of shooting an arrow was considered mandatory for hunting and self-defense centuries ago, it is even learned and practiced in modern times. Rest assured, it requires the right posture and a lot of practice. However, you might be surprised to see the above image. The girl, who is the most flexible person in the world is using her feet to shoot an arrow while the rest of her body is balanced on her hands.
There is a reason Sofie Dossi’s performances leave everyone speechless. The above image from one of her acts says it all.
However, Sofie may soon face competition from an emerging contortionist, Aleksei Goloborodko. There might be a dispute amongst fans regarding who is the most flexible person in the world. Aleksei belongs to Russia but is currently traveling around the world to showcase his talent. Just like Sofie is often metaphorically referred to as ‘spineless’, Aleksei is said to be ‘literally made of pipe cleaners’.
The images below are evidence of the fact that this guy is as talented as Sofie, if not more. During one of the interviews, he was asked to give a piece of advice to upcoming contortionists. He recommended starting practice at a young age so that the body becomes flexible which may be slightly daunting to achieve after the age of 18.
While having a naturally flexible body is an advantage, and may enhance the contortionist’s performance, the art can also be learned with continuous and rigorous practice. However, attempting the moves without any guidance is what we strictly disapprove of. Whether you follow an instructor online or join physical classes is up to you, but attempting to copy the performers on television on your own may be risky and can result in physical injury.
