Summer is around the corner and soon we’d all be heading out to parks, enjoying outdoor cinemas and hosting open air parties in our backyards. A mere thought of these summer activities brings us joy and makes us feel excited. However, along with the perks of long, sunny days, comes the threat of dengue, malaria, and all the other diseases that can be transmitted by mosquitoes. Therefore, it is particularly important to know how to keep mosquitoes from biting. Though it is true that not all mosquitoes spread diseases, their bites leave red, itchy bumps that are highly uncomfortable.
Here are a few ways to prevent mosquito bites that can be easily adopted by everyone:
Don`t serve them food during mealtimes
Well, you might be surprised to know that just like humans, mosquitoes too, have fixed mealtimes. Consequently, they are more likely to crave for food, i.e., your blood, during those times as it is then that they are the hungriest. Therefore, it is better to avoid going out around sunrise and sunset, as these are the times mosquitoes tend to enjoy a feast and would spare no one.
Don’t let them in
Often there are small openings in windows or other entrances that are large enough for mosquitoes to enter your home. The key is not to let them in by placing a wired mesh around all such areas. The mesh serves as a bug screen that hinders the entrance of unwanted insects in the house, especially spiders, flies and mosquitoes.
However, if you do not want to ruin the beautiful design of your window frames by putting insect screens in front of them, you must cover yourself with a mosquito net while sleeping, because if they come in, these stinging organisms won’t spare you unless you make an effort to protect yourself.
Use a mosquito repellent
Mosquito repellents are chemicals that make it difficult for these insects to detect us. Repellents come in liquid as well as spray forms. Once applied to the skin, they make it difficult for mosquitos to smell the presence of the person who has applied it. However, it must be remembered that insect repellents are not perfumes. They should only be used in a moderate quantity (as per the instructions), so as to avoid adverse reactions like rashes, allergies and in extreme cases, seizures. Your best bet would be to choose insect repellents that have been approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Since mosquitoes have certain favorite spots they like to sting at (including forehead, wrists, elbows, ankles and feet), it is wise to apply a slightly greater quantity on these areas. Though care must be taken not to exceed the maximum quantity allowed for safe usage.
Fun Fact: We just said that mosquito repellents aren’t perfumes, but what if a perfume works as a mosquito repellent
Surprisingly, research has revealed that Victoria’s Secret Bombshell perfume has the capability to repel mosquitoes for up to two hours.
This has to be a women’s favorite solution for preventing mosquito bites, given that Bombshell is a ladies’ perfume. The only drawback is that unlike the actual mosquito repellents, it would need to be reapplied every two hours.
Wear light-colored clothing
A fairly easy solution to the problem “how to keep mosquitoes from biting?” is simply wearing light-colored clothes when going outdoors, especially during the summer. Reason being that dark colors are easily noticeable by mosquitoes because they are nocturnal creatures. Therefore, their eyes are naturally designed to detect darker objects earlier. Hence, wearing light-colored clothes reduces your chances of being bitten by a mosquito.

Don’t provide them with breeding grounds
In case you are wondering why and how you would do that, let us inform you that stagnant water can serve as an effective breeding place for mosquitoes. In fact, even the remaining water in an old vase can help these insects breed in as few as 14 days. Therefore, ensure there is no accumulated rainwater, or mud pool in the area surrounding your home. If you find any sources of standing water, it is always a good idea to team up with fellow residents and clean it up.
